RBT Behavior Acquisition Study Guide

Behavior acquisition—also called skill acquisition—is the heart of what RBTs do day to day, and it is one of the largest domains on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition). This is where you teach new skills: language, self-help, social, academic, and play behaviors. To do that well, you need a solid command of reinforcement, the major teaching formats (discrete trial training and natural environment teaching), prompting and fading, shaping, chaining, discrimination training, and how to make skills last and transfer.

Throughout this domain, remember that RBTs implement skill-acquisition plans that the supervising BCBA designs. Your excellence lies in delivering procedures with precision and consistency—clear instructions, correct prompting, immediate reinforcement, and accurate data—rather than in inventing or modifying programs. This guide gives you the conceptual foundation to do exactly that.

Skill acquisition and the RBT's role

A skill-acquisition plan is a written program that specifies the target skill, the teaching procedure, the materials, the prompting and reinforcement strategies, the mastery criteria, and how to take data. The RBT's job is to follow this plan as written, session after session, so that teaching is consistent and the data accurately reflect the client's progress. Consistency matters enormously: if two technicians teach the same target in different ways, the learner receives mixed signals and progress stalls.

If a plan is not working, if a client is not responding, or if something seems unsafe or unclear, the in-scope response is to document what you observe and consult your supervisor—not to change the procedure on your own. Modifying a program requires the clinical judgment and assessment data that belong to the BCBA role.

Reinforcement

Reinforcement is the process by which a consequence following a behavior increases the future frequency of that behavior. It is the single most important principle in skill acquisition. Note the defining feature: reinforcement is identified by its effect. If a consequence does not increase behavior, it is not reinforcement, no matter how pleasant it seems.

Positive and negative reinforcement

Both positive and negative reinforcement increase behavior; the difference is whether a stimulus is added or removed.

  • Positive reinforcement adds a stimulus after the behavior, and the behavior increases—for example, giving praise or a token after a child completes a task, which makes task completion more likely next time.
  • Negative reinforcement removes or reduces an aversive stimulus after the behavior, and the behavior increases—for example, ending a difficult demand after the child asks for a break, which makes appropriately asking for a break more likely.

The most common exam trap here is thinking "negative" means bad or means punishment. It does not. In this context, positive means add and negative means remove; both types of reinforcement strengthen behavior. Punishment, by contrast, decreases behavior and is a separate concept.

Schedules of reinforcement

A schedule of reinforcement specifies which occurrences of a behavior are reinforced. Continuous reinforcement (CRF) delivers reinforcement after every correct response and is ideal when first teaching a new skill, because it builds the behavior quickly. Intermittent reinforcement reinforces only some responses and is used to maintain behavior once it is established, because it makes the behavior more resistant to extinction. The four basic intermittent schedules are:

  • Fixed ratio (FR): reinforcement after a set number of responses (FR5 = every 5th response).
  • Variable ratio (VR): reinforcement after an average number of responses that varies (VR5 = on average every 5th response); produces steady, high rates and strong resistance to extinction.
  • Fixed interval (FI): reinforcement for the first response after a set amount of time (FI2 = first response after 2 minutes).
  • Variable interval (VI): reinforcement for the first response after an average, varying amount of time (VI2 = on average every 2 minutes).

Remember that ratio schedules are based on the number of responses and interval schedules are based on the passage of time. As a rule, teams start with continuous reinforcement for acquisition and thin to intermittent schedules for maintenance.

Discrete trial training (DTT)

Discrete trial training (DTT) is a highly structured teaching method that breaks skills into small, discrete components and teaches them in repeated, controlled trials. Each trial has a clear beginning and end, which is why it is called "discrete." The core components are often summarized as the three-term contingency plus prompts and an intertrial interval:

  • Antecedent / discriminative stimulus (SD): the instruction or cue that signals the opportunity to respond, such as "Touch red."
  • Prompt (as needed): assistance delivered with or after the SD to help the learner respond correctly.
  • Response: the learner's answer or action.
  • Consequence: reinforcement for a correct response, or a correction/error-correction procedure for an incorrect one.
  • Intertrial interval (ITI): a brief pause before the next trial begins.

DTT delivers many learning opportunities in a short time and produces clear data. It is especially useful for teaching foundational discriminations and new skills that benefit from massed, repeated practice.

Natural environment teaching (NET)

Natural environment teaching (NET), sometimes called incidental teaching, embeds teaching into the learner's natural activities and interests, using naturally occurring motivation. Instead of sitting at a table running trials, you might teach requesting during play by holding a preferred toy the child reaches for, then prompting and reinforcing the request. NET capitalizes on the learner's current motivation and uses natural reinforcers, which tends to support better generalization—skills are learned where they will be used.

DTT and NET are complementary rather than competing. Many programs use DTT to establish a skill efficiently and NET to help it generalize and become functional in everyday contexts. Which is used, and when, is specified in the plan.

Prompting and prompt fading

A prompt is a cue or assistance added to increase the likelihood of a correct response. The goal of prompting is never to prompt forever—it is to help the learner succeed and then to fade assistance so the learner responds independently to the natural SD.

Types of prompts

  • Physical prompt: physically guiding the learner (for example, hand-over-hand), which is the most intrusive.
  • Modeling prompt: demonstrating the behavior for the learner to imitate.
  • Gestural prompt: pointing, nodding, or gesturing toward the correct response.
  • Verbal prompt: spoken words or partial words that guide the response.
  • Visual/textual prompt: pictures, written words, or cues that guide responding.
  • Positional prompt: placing the correct item closer to the learner.

Prompts are also grouped into response prompts (physical, model, verbal, gestural—help delivered by the instructor) and stimulus prompts (changing the materials themselves, such as making the correct item larger or closer). Physical prompts are generally considered the most intrusive and gestural or visual prompts less so.

Fading and prompt hierarchies

Prompt fading is the gradual removal of prompts so the learner increasingly responds on their own. Two common systematic approaches are:

  • Most-to-least prompting: begin with the most assistance needed for success and gradually reduce it. This is often used with newer or more difficult skills to minimize errors.
  • Least-to-most prompting: begin with the least assistance (an opportunity to respond independently) and add more only as needed. This gives the learner the chance to respond independently first.

Another approach is time delay, in which you insert a growing pause between the SD and the prompt, giving the learner time to respond before help arrives. The purpose of all fading procedures is to prevent prompt dependence—a state in which the learner waits for a prompt instead of responding to the natural cue. A frequent exam theme is recognizing that failing to fade prompts creates prompt dependence and undermines independence.

Shaping

Shaping teaches a new behavior by reinforcing successive approximations— responses that get progressively closer to the target behavior. You reinforce a response that is a small step toward the goal, then require a slightly closer response for the next reinforcement, and so on, while no longer reinforcing the earlier, less complete approximations. Shaping is how you build behaviors that are not yet in the learner's repertoire at all.

For example, to teach a nonvocal learner to say "ball," you might first reinforce any vocalization, then a "b" sound, then "ba," then "ball." Each step raises the criterion. Shaping uses two processes together: differential reinforcement (reinforcing the closer approximation) and extinction (no longer reinforcing the previous one). Do not confuse shaping with chaining: shaping refines a single behavior through approximations, while chaining links multiple distinct behaviors into a sequence.

Chaining

Chaining teaches a behavior chain—a sequence of individual behaviors that together produce an outcome, such as handwashing or brushing teeth. The first step is a task analysis, which breaks the skill into its component steps in order. There are three main chaining procedures:

  • Forward chaining: teach the first step to mastery while completing the rest for the learner, then add the second step, and so on, moving forward through the chain.
  • Backward chaining: complete all steps for the learner except the last one, teaching the final step first; because the learner always finishes the chain, they immediately contact the natural reinforcer, then you work backward step by step.
  • Total-task chaining: the learner attempts every step of the chain in each session, with prompting on whatever steps they cannot yet do independently. This works well for shorter chains or learners who can already perform some steps.

A useful distinction for the exam: in forward and backward chaining you teach one step at a time, whereas in total-task chaining the learner practices the entire sequence each time. Backward chaining is often chosen when contacting reinforcement quickly is important, because the learner completes the satisfying final step from the very start.

Discrimination training and stimulus control

Discrimination training teaches a learner to respond differently to different stimuli. It works by reinforcing a response in the presence of one stimulus (the SD, or discriminative stimulus) and withholding reinforcement in the presence of another (the S-delta). Over time, the response comes to occur reliably in the presence of the SD and not the S-delta.

When a behavior reliably occurs in the presence of a specific stimulus because of this history, we say the behavior is under stimulus control. For example, a child who says "red" when shown a red card but not when shown a blue card is demonstrating stimulus control. Much of early instruction is about bringing behavior under appropriate stimulus control—responding to the right cue at the right time. The goal of prompting and fading, discussed above, is to transfer stimulus control from the prompt to the natural SD.

Generalization and maintenance

Teaching is not finished when a learner performs a skill correctly in a session. The skill must also generalize and be maintained.

  • Stimulus generalization occurs when a learned behavior happens across new settings, people, or materials that differ from the teaching situation—for example, greeting people at home, at school, and in the community, not just with one therapist.
  • Response generalization occurs when a learner produces new, untaught response forms that serve the same function—for example, learning to say "hi" and then also using "hello" and "hey."
  • Maintenance is the continued performance of a skill over time after teaching or dense reinforcement has ended. Thinning reinforcement schedules and periodic review support maintenance.

Teams promote generalization deliberately—by teaching across multiple people, settings, and materials, using natural reinforcers, and incorporating natural environment teaching. A common exam point is distinguishing generalization (across settings or responses) from maintenance (across time). Both are essential for skills to be truly functional in the learner's life.

Common exam pitfalls

  • Thinking negative reinforcement is punishment. Negative reinforcement removes a stimulus and increases behavior; punishment decreases behavior.
  • Confusing ratio and interval schedules. Ratio = number of responses; interval = passage of time.
  • Confusing shaping and chaining. Shaping refines one behavior through approximations; chaining links multiple behaviors into a sequence.
  • Mixing up forward and backward chaining. Forward teaches the first step first; backward teaches the last step first so the learner finishes the chain.
  • Ignoring prompt fading. Failing to fade prompts leads to prompt dependence.
  • Confusing generalization and maintenance. Generalization is across settings/responses; maintenance is across time.
  • Modifying the plan independently. RBTs implement skill-acquisition plans as written and consult the supervisor about changes.
