Behavior acquisition, sometimes called skill acquisition, is the part of your job that builds new abilities in the people you work with. Where behavior reduction focuses on decreasing challenging behavior, acquisition focuses on teaching: communication, play, self-help, academic, and social skills that expand a learner's independence. On the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition) this is the single largest domain, which makes sense because implementing skill-acquisition plans is the core of what an RBT does in almost every session. This quiz targets the teaching procedures you will be expected to run exactly as your supervising BCBA writes them.
The questions here are scenario-driven on purpose. Knowing the definition of a most-to-least prompt is a start, but the exam wants to see that you can pick the right teaching format, deliver the correct prompt level, fade support at the right moment, and reinforce on the schedule the plan specifies. Discrete-trial teaching and natural environment teaching
Two teaching formats dominate this domain. Discrete-trial teaching (DTT) breaks a skill into small, repeatable trials, each with a clear beginning and end. A single trial follows a tidy three-term structure: an antecedent (the instruction or discriminative stimulus), the learner's response, and a consequence (reinforcement for a correct response or a prompt and correction for an error). Trials are separated by a brief inter-trial interval, and massed practice lets a learner get many opportunities to respond in a short period. DTT shines for skills that need many repetitions and a highly structured presentation.
Natural environment teaching (NET) embeds those same learning opportunities into play, routines, and the learner's own motivation. Instead of sitting at a table, you follow the child's lead: if they reach for bubbles, you hold the bubbles as a chance to teach a request. NET capitalizes on naturally occurring motivating operations, which tends to produce responses that generalize more readily to everyday life. Most quality programs blend both formats, using DTT to build a skill to fluency and NET to loosen it up and make it functional across settings and people.
Prompting hierarchies and fading
A prompt is any added help that increases the chance of a correct response. Prompts fall on a rough continuum from most intrusive to least intrusive: full physical, partial physical, modeling, gestural, and verbal or positional cues. Your plan will specify a prompting strategy, and the two you will see most often are the mirror image of each other.
- Most-to-least prompting starts with the level of help that guarantees success and gradually reduces it as the learner shows they can do more on their own. It is errorless-friendly and common when teaching brand-new skills, because it keeps errors low from the start.
- Least-to-most prompting starts by giving the learner a chance to respond independently, then adds increasing help only if they do not respond correctly. It gives more room to demonstrate independence but risks more errors, so it fits skills a learner is closer to mastering.
- Graduated guidance uses hand-over-hand support that you fade moment to moment based on how much the learner needs, often paired with shadowing your hands near theirs.
- Time delay inserts a growing pause between the instruction and the prompt (constant or progressive delay), transferring stimulus control from your prompt to the natural cue.
The goal of every prompting system is to fade the extra help so the learner responds to the natural discriminative stimulus alone. Prompt dependence, where a learner waits for your help before responding, is the failure mode you are guarding against, which is why systematic fading is written into good plans.
Shaping, chaining, and discrimination training
Shaping teaches a brand-new behavior by reinforcing successive approximations toward a terminal goal. You reinforce responses that get closer and closer to the target, gradually raising the criterion so that behavior which used to earn reinforcement no longer does. Teaching a nonvocal learner to say a word by first reinforcing any sound, then a similar sound, then the full word is a classic example.
Chaining teaches a multi-step behavior by linking individual responses that already exist into a sequence, guided by a task analysis that lists each step in order. Forward chaining teaches the first step to criterion while prompting the rest, then adds the next step, and so on. Backward chaining teaches the last step first so the learner always finishes the chain and contacts the natural reinforcer, then works backward. Total-task chaining prompts the learner through every step of the chain each session, fading help across all steps at once. Handwashing, tooth brushing, and getting dressed are common chaining targets.
Discrimination training teaches a learner to respond differently to different stimuli. By reinforcing responses in the presence of one stimulus (the S-delta receives no reinforcement) you bring behavior under stimulus control, which is the foundation of skills like identifying colors, following the correct instruction, or reading. Generalization is the flip side: once a skill is solid you want it to occur across new people, materials, and places, and to maintain over time. Plans build in generalization by teaching with varied examples and thinning reinforcement, and maintenance by scheduling periodic review of mastered targets.
Reinforcement schedules that build skills
New skills are typically taught on a continuous reinforcement schedule (CRF), where every correct response earns reinforcement, because dense reinforcement drives fast acquisition. Once a skill is established, plans thin to intermittent schedules to build durability and resistance to extinction. You should be comfortable telling the four basic intermittent schedules apart: fixed ratio and variable ratio deliver reinforcement based on the number of responses, while fixed interval and variable interval deliver it based on time. Variable schedules produce steadier responding and are harder to extinguish, which is why they are often the goal as a learner approaches mastery.

- Match the format to the goal. DTT for high-repetition, structured skills; NET for functional, motivation-driven targets.
- Know your prompt directions. Most-to-least reduces help; least-to-most adds it. Both aim to fade to the natural cue.
