First, What Is a Reinforcement Schedule?

Continuous Reinforcement (CRF)

Under continuous reinforcement, every single instance of the target behavior is reinforced. One response, one reinforcer, every time.

  • Example: A vending machine. Every time you insert money and press the button, you get a snack. Every correct response is reinforced.
  • In ABA: When teaching a brand-new skill, you often start with CRF because it makes the connection between behavior and reinforcement crystal clear. If a learner is just beginning to request items using a picture card, you reinforce every single request.

CRF is powerful for acquiring new behaviors quickly. Its downside is that behavior learned under CRF tends to extinguish quickly once reinforcement stops, and delivering reinforcement every time is not sustainable in the real world.

Intermittent Reinforcement

Under intermittent reinforcement, only some instances of the behavior are reinforced. This is where the four schedules come in.

  • Example: A slot machine. It pays off only sometimes, and unpredictably, yet people keep playing.
  • In ABA: Once a skill is established, you shift to intermittent reinforcement to make the behavior durable. Behavior maintained on intermittent schedules is much more resistant to extinction, which is exactly what you want for skills the learner should keep using long-term.

That contrast is a favorite exam point: CRF for acquisition, intermittent for maintenance and resistance to extinction.

The Two Dimensions: Ratio vs. Interval, Fixed vs. Variable

Every intermittent schedule is built from two simple questions.

Question 1: Is reinforcement based on the number of responses, or the passage of time?

  • Ratio schedules deliver reinforcement based on the number of responses the learner makes.
  • Interval schedules deliver reinforcement based on time, specifically, the first response after a certain amount of time has passed.

Question 2: Is the requirement fixed, or does it vary?

  • Fixed means the requirement is always the same (the same number, or the same amount of time).
  • Variable means the requirement changes around an average.

Combine those two dimensions and you get the four basic schedules:

  • Fixed Ratio (FR): same number of responses.
  • Variable Ratio (VR): varying number of responses (around an average).
  • Fixed Interval (FI): first response after the same amount of time.
  • Variable Interval (VI): first response after varying amounts of time (around an average).

The Four Schedules Explained

Fixed Ratio (FR)

Reinforcement is delivered after a fixed number of responses. An FR-5 schedule means reinforcement comes after every 5th correct response.

  • ABA example: A learner earns a token after completing 3 math problems (FR-3).

Variable Ratio (VR)

Reinforcement is delivered after a variable number of responses, averaging out to a set number. A VR-5 schedule means reinforcement comes after 5 responses on average, sometimes after 3, sometimes after 7, and so on.

  • Everyday example: A slot machine. It pays out after an unpredictable number of pulls, which is exactly why it keeps people engaged.
  • ABA example: A teacher praises a student’s hand-raising on average every 4th time, but unpredictably.
  • Response pattern: VR produces high, steady rates of responding with little pausing, because the learner never knows which response will pay off. VR schedules are excellent for maintaining behavior.

Fixed Interval (FI)

Reinforcement is delivered for the first response after a fixed amount of time has passed. An FI-5-minute schedule means the first correct response after 5 minutes elapses is reinforced; responses before that do nothing.

  • Everyday example: Checking the mailbox when mail arrives at the same time daily. Checking before delivery is pointless; the first check after delivery “pays off.”
  • ABA example: A learner can earn a reinforcer for on-task behavior, but only the first time it is checked after each 10-minute interval.
  • Response pattern: FI often produces a scalloped pattern, slow responding right after reinforcement, then increasing as the interval’s end approaches.

Variable Interval (VI)

Reinforcement is delivered for the first response after a variable amount of time, averaging a set duration. A VI-5-minute schedule reinforces the first response after an average of 5 minutes, but the actual interval changes each time.

  • Everyday example: Refreshing a website to see if a much-anticipated post is up. It could appear at any moment, so you check steadily.
  • ABA example: A supervisor gives feedback for good work at unpredictable times, averaging a few times per session.
  • Response pattern: VI produces steady, moderate rates of responding, because the learner cannot predict exactly when reinforcement becomes available.

A Quick Way to Keep Them Straight

Here is a memory framework that survives exam pressure:

  • First letter (F or V): Is the requirement the same every time (Fixed) or changing (Variable)?
  • Second letter (R or I): Is it based on Responses (Ratio) or time Interval?

Then remember the general effect on responding:

  • Ratio schedules (FR, VR) tend to produce higher response rates, because more responding means more reinforcement.
  • Interval schedules (FI, VI) tend to produce lower, more time-paced response rates, because responding faster does not speed up the clock.
  • Variable schedules (VR, VI) tend to produce steadier responding with less pausing than their fixed counterparts, and greater resistance to extinction.

If you can answer the two questions and recall those tendencies, you can handle almost any schedule item on the exam.

Thinning a Reinforcement Schedule

In practice, RBTs rarely leave a learner on continuous reinforcement forever. Thinning is the process of gradually shifting from a richer schedule (more frequent reinforcement) to a leaner one (less frequent reinforcement).

  • Why it matters: Thinning makes behavior more durable and more like the natural world, where reinforcement is not constant. It also reduces satiation and keeps reinforcers meaningful.
  • How it looks: You might start teaching a skill on CRF (reinforce every response), then move to FR-2, then FR-4, then a variable schedule, gradually stretching the requirement as the learner succeeds.
  • The key caution: Thin gradually. Stretching the schedule too quickly can cause the behavior to break down, sometimes called “ratio strain,” where responding falls apart because the requirement jumped too far too fast. As always, the RBT follows the schedule and thinning plan written by the supervising behavior analyst, rather than adjusting it independently. This ties directly into understanding what an RBT does and staying within scope.

Why This Matters on the Exam and in Sessions

Reinforcement schedules are not just abstract trivia. On the exam, you will likely face scenario questions that describe a situation and ask you to identify the schedule, predict the response pattern, or choose the appropriate schedule for a goal (for example, CRF for a new skill versus a VR schedule for maintenance). Knowing the two dimensions lets you reason through these rather than guess.

In real sessions, the schedule you implement directly shapes how well and how durably a learner acquires and keeps a skill. Delivering reinforcement on the wrong schedule, or thinning too aggressively, can stall progress. Implementing the plan’s schedule faithfully, and collecting accurate data on how the learner responds, is core RBT work.
